Many people have heard about the recent flooding in the south and in other areas all across the country, but many of us think that we do not live in areas with a flood risk so we will be okay. However, the truth is that every area is at risk for flooding and flooding can and does happen anywhere. Here are some ways to protect your home and property from flooding now and the future. This way you can feel safe and secure and protect the things that are the most valuable to you.

Ask your real estate agent for advice
When real estate agents go to sell a home, they need to know certain pieces of information about the home. This includes flood and water damage risks. If they cannot tell you themselves, they may be able to tell you how to get the information about your home’s flood risk

Install Sewer Backflow Values
In many parts of town, flooding can cause sewers to back up and this can not only cause flooding and damages to property but it can pose a health risk for many people. You should hire a plumber to install these for you so that you will be less likely to have damage caused by a sewer.

Raise electrical systems
When flooding risks happen, any electrical systems and wiring that is near the water can cause damage, power outages, and even be dangerous. It is a good idea to raise these systems one foot above flood elevation levels for everyone’s safety.

Put a sump pump in your basement
Basements are usually the first things to contain water when floods happen because they are lower to the ground. A sump pump can help pump this water out of your home and keep your property safe and well protected.

Buy Flood Insurance
Do not just assume you have flood insurance, ask about it. It will be your best protect against property and damage repairs and provides protection year round. It can give you peace of mind.

Rain and storms happen no matter where we live and be prepared and protected is the best thing we can do for our homes, our property and our loved ones. It is a good idea to think about these things when looking for a home or to think about them if you are a seller. The sooner you have everything in place, the better off everyone will be.
